June 15

Evening was pretty good up this way for the Beartooth boys. We all got a chance to get out and throw some dries recently with all the caddis flying around. I went out by myself on Friday evening and after seeing all the bugs and no rises yet, I thought I would throw ‘em anyway. First cast with a little size 16 caddis with tiny rubber legs, proved true with a fat ‘lil brown.  I was throwing a big caddis trailed by a smaller caddis. I also caught a few on a size 18 Pheasant Tail ‘Lil Spanker. One brown that took the little dropper even had a 4 inch sculpin lodged in its throat. So dries? Yes. Caddis caddis caddis. I pulled 10 or so fish Friday evening with the caddis combo before going home.

Last night was a little more difficult for some reason. I still got some fish on dries, but not as many. They really weren’t hitting the bigger caddis’ patterns until later, but the little size 16 with the legs was good again.  Craig and I went down to Ruby and waded for some hours, we both did ok. Craig was drowning nymphs and got a nice rainbow right away. I believe he caught that one on a size 14 Olive Seringold. I then switched to dries that way we covered both. I stayed with a big brown caddis with legs followed by a smaller caddis with legs for the rest if the night and did ok. Nothing crazy, but still a decent amount of action. The water is a lot clearer than last week, so if you are like me and have to wade most of the time, be a little sneakier 🙂 Happy fishing!

June 13 and 14th

Friends: Joe, Robert, Jerry, and Jake had fun with Gunnar catching some nice trout and in a variety of sizes. And yes, there were a few white fish too. The trout were eating mostly wet bugs. The smaller fish were taking the dries.

June 8, 2012

Since starting here at the shop I have been bugging Marty to go fishing with me, each time he couldn’t go for various reasons. Today to my surprise he said yes. He was itching to get out and row his raft and really wanted to show me the wade only section. We put in at Raynolds at about 9 o’clock in the Morning and Got to Pine Butte at 4 o’clock. We took our time throughout the float and really worked all of the slack water, Boulders, edges, buckets, ETC. We each caught about five fish that day, but we really had to work for those fish. Note, we stopped and anchored and spent a good amount of time wading different spots. This is a wade only section where boats are permitted for transportation only. You may even see some kayakers on this stretch early in the year when the water is faster and higher.

The water was green with a foot to a foot and a half of visibility. Throughout the day we saw one caddis flying and a few Beatis. We did not have any luck on Micro Mays or Green Machines but they did like a size 16 Delektable Lil’ Spanker Pheasant tails. Before that The Shop Vac in Olive and Brown caught most of the fish. At one specific hole I used a size 8 stonefly nymph that was black with some purple in the dubbing; it caught three fish right away but didn’t work at all the rest of the day. That’s fishing! We need to fish more and harder!

June 6 & 7, 2012

So, I got the chance to go fishin a little with the last three days off. The first day, Craig (from the shop) took my lady and I and our little puppy Bill up to Pine Butte in the walk/wade section.

The second day however was a little different. A buddy and I floated from Raynolds Pass to Lyons stopping at every pocket and back eddy there was to offer. The water was fast and high, but awesome color. It started snowing when we got out of the truck. Bill (the puppy) was cold but not complaining, and neither were we 🙂 It being so overcast, we had confidence it was gunna be a great day. Our first stop was only a few hundred yards down. We pulled in below a huge boulder pocket and got out to fish (walk/wade section only). I put on a Delektable Mega Prince Flashbacksize #8 with a big ‘ole pink worm as a dropper again. Fish on! Two 18 inch rainbows, and a 15 inch rainbow in that hole. Right away we got into them and just never really got out of ‘em:)

http://www.beartoothflyfishing.com/flyfishingreports/images/IMG_0370_000.JPGhttp://www.beartoothflyfishing.com/flyfishingreports/images/IMG_0378_000.JPG

We caught a bunch of browns on the worm and the stonefly patterns including the Delektable Big Red. A few were caught on the Delektable Spanker pattern in the pheasant tail size #10. I threw a couple of caddis emerger patterns too only pulling some small fish on those. The water was getting clearer, still only a few feet of viz, but perfect! It was fast water and it was quite windy. I didn’t throw any streamers like I should have on that cloudy, cold day 🙁 Once again, my fingers were cold and there was no real reason to switch up.

Yesterday I went with some adopted parents of mine and floated from Pine Butte to Lyons. Bill also went along for the ride and slept the entire way again. Ah the life of a puppy 🙂 I wanted Ed and Mary to catch some fish, so we threw on the stoned worm combo first. And to nobody’s surprise, they got locked in right way. Ed caught 2 really nice browns right away still in view of the boat launch, both of which were near 18 inches. Â Ed’s wife, Mary caught a nice rainbow and a real nice brown on the Delektable Mega Price size #8 also. My buddy and I were going through the smaller drop patterns with big Skwalla patterns on top. I tied on a few caddis emergers and smaller emerging nymph patterns after seeing some subsurface rises; and got some smaller fish.

http://www.beartoothflyfishing.com/flyfishingreports/images/IMG_0415.JPGhttp://www.beartoothflyfishing.com/flyfishingreports/images/IMG_0425.JPG

Delektable Olive Serengold size #14 and some smaller Spanker patterns were working a little, but the one fly that got me the “big one that got away” was a size #14 Red Headed Step-Child. I hooked into a monster brown on this little guy in the fast water and had quite the fight with him only to loose him a few feet away in the end. Pretty fish though 🙂 oh well! Anyway, the water is great out there and you can creep right up on them with little effort the way this bit of murk is. Most of the fish we got into were just inside the color. So, don’t let that little bit of that color stop you; they still have to eat 🙂 happy fishing!!!

June 5, 2012

Young Dan and I were fortunate enough to get the same day off from working in the shop. We have been watching the river and listening to others reports and decided that floating the upper river in part of the wade section would be a good bet. We floated from Pine butte down to Windy Point. The day started off a little slow, the river rose a foot and the water was green with about a foot of visibility. We missed a couple fish right away using the Delektable Olive Hurless flashback with a Caddis emerger following it. We used 10 foot leaders adding weight as needed. The water color looked great with a little murk until we hit the West Fork. Mud was dumping out of there. So, this is where we got the famous San Juan worm out:)

http://www.beartoothflyfishing.com/flyfishingreports/images/DSCF0679.JPGhttp://www.beartoothflyfishing.com/flyfishingreports/images/DSCF0681_000.JPG

http://www.beartoothflyfishing.com/flyfishingreports/images/DSCF0682.JPGhttp://www.beartoothflyfishing.com/flyfishingreports/images/DSCF0683.JPG

Later on in the float we ran into a spot where muddy water was coming in on both sides, Dan suggested we fish it and see what happens. It wasn’t ten minutes before we had a double on. Both of the fish took the worm right on the seam; a few more fish were taken out of this spot before we moved on. The rest of the day went the same way, Muddy water and some fish throughout. We spent the day Nymphing using long leaders and a lot of weight. We would start off with one B and keeping adding some as needed. Dan put a Delektable Olive Hurless Flashback size #8 on with a very pink size #8 San Juan (with a hotbead) as the dropper. They loved the worms and one trout even had worms pouring out of his mouth when we pulled him up, straight gorging. Dan kept the pink worm on and kept changing out the stonefly patterns. We did really well with the combo. We went thru all the juicy Skwalla patterns we had, but they just seemed to only want the worm that day.

Two Expert Guides/Outfitter and a new Shuttle Guy…

We floated Raynolds Pass to Pine Butte. You can get out of the boat and wade fish, no fishing from a boat. Dan on the oars the first part of the trip, Marty getting in shape for summer guiding finishing up. Dan is a ballerina handling Nancy’s drift boat. You need to be an expert oarsman on the upper part of the Madison.

Excellent fishing with conditions ideal. Overcast with no wind or rain. Big stones mostly, Delektable Hurless and sometimes Delektable Lil’ Spankers. The bottom not to difficult to wade, but the river is fast. Dan and Marty might dispute, but the new guy Rog had the big Brown of the day. All had great fish, Bows and Browns mostly in the 16-18 inch range. Elk, antelope, eagles, osprey, and of course plenty of fish, all in an excellent day of wade fishing.

May 26, 2012

As you can see by the pictures of the Lodge, it has been a bit on the chilly side for fishing.

http://www.beartoothflyfishing.com/flyfishingreports/images/IMG_0345_000.JPGhttp://www.beartoothflyfishing.com/flyfishingreports/images/2012-05-2706.50.00.jpg

However, if you don’t mind a little snow and cold, you’ll find that it is still great fishing. I went down to the river after work today around 5:30 and fished until 8:30, and was quite satisfied with my decision to tuff it out! Tore it up… Period! 22 fish landed in that time, 6 or 7 of which were rainbows, one big whitie, and the rest were browns. It seems to me that the snow coming down just turns the fish on. And boy, was it on! I was using a Delektable Olive Hurless Stone size 8, no flashback; and my dropper was a size 14 Delektable Pheasant Tail Lil’ Spanker. The first fish was on the second cast, and it kinda went like that the rest of the evening 🙂

http://www.beartoothflyfishing.com/flyfishingreports/images/IMG_0334_000.JPGhttp://www.beartoothflyfishing.com/flyfishingreports/images/IMG_0330_000.JPG

I didn’t use any weight (wading the edge and fishing a little shallower water, I didn’t feel any need to put any on) and had my dropper about 25 inches below my top fly. I worked the edge upstream little by little and did very well that way. Working from the edge and fanning out with my casting pattern just kinda creapin’ up the river slowly working the pockets and holes. The water color is getting clearer; I would say 2 to 3 feet of visibility right now (above Cameron, MT). It was a little windy at times but not too bad. Taking breaks warming my fingers up in my neck and breaking ice off guides, my father would say “‘builds character”. It was way cold, but I was catching fish.

http://www.beartoothflyfishing.com/flyfishingreports/images/IMG_0338_000.JPGhttp://www.beartoothflyfishing.com/flyfishingreports/images/IMG_0342.JPG

Anyway, I had no reason to change flies, because what I had tied on was just working too good (and it was too cold to). I also threw a streamer for about 10 minutes before I got back to the truck, but no luck there. Streamers I’m sure were probably a great choice in the snowy weather, but my fingers and brain were too cold, so I went home. Overall, it was a beautiful snowy evening and I went home very satisfied. Happy fishing!!!

May 22, 2012

After my first week working in the shop I was given an afternoon off, so naturally I decided to go out and fish. A couple buddies of mine from Bozeman met me up at the shop and we decided to float Lyons to Palisades. The weather was changing every minute from sunny to cloudy and some rain in the mix. During this day we never saw another boat on the river.

http://www.beartoothflyfishing.com/flyfishingreports/images/DSCF0668.JPGhttp://www.beartoothflyfishing.com/flyfishingreports/images/DSCF0670.JPG

We started off fishing streamers, the Delektable Double screamer and the Flash fry worked really well. The fish seemed to like the darker flies with some to a lot of flash. The straight retrieve worked but when you added some variations into the retrieve such as twitching or jigging, the strike was almost instantaneous. Once we realized the streamer bite was on we started throwing double streamer rigs which turned out to be deadly. This allowed the rear fly to be fished deeper so we were able to fish multiple depths in one retrieve. Right now the water color is an off green with a foot to a foot and half of visibility which really allowed us to get close to the bank and all of the pockets behind boulders.

May 22, 2012 continued

I was able to get out and wade some of the Madison below Varney this afternoon for a few hours and was not dissappointed at all be the results of just sneaking along the edge of the river and high stickin the pockets and seams. The water vis is about 1.5 to 2 feet now and is just a killer grey/green color. I started out with the Delektable Hurless Olive Flashback size 8 with a neon green caddis emerger trailing it. That did very well and produced some 10-15 inch fish, both brown and rainbows. I fished caddis emergers and pupas as my dropper for a while, switching out between different caddis patterns, but eventually I gave in and tied on other Delektable stones as a dropper because they were doing so well…and proceeded to crush it 🙂 Don’t let the color of the water deter you, the fish are hungry and very active. I pulled around 20 in a few hours with no regrets of going out. No real monsters, but a fish on the line is still a fish on the line! And of course I lost that "big one" and had some choice words for that particular moment 🙂 I did land one brown trout that went about 18 inches. There are not a ton of people out right now. I didn’t see a single boat pass me below Varney Bridge during the couple to 3 hours Bill (my 7 week old red heeler) and I were out there. And there was a beautiful sunset to capitalize on the day! Happy Fishing!

Dan took the Delektable family on a scenic fun float which shows the river color well. The family had a great time. The water was a bit off color from Raynolds to Pine Butte and a bit high. Wade cautiously…

Week of May 11, 2012

I want to start off this report by telling a story about the “Wall” we have at our house. My Dad and I have been very fortunate over the years to catch some big fish and fill our tags with some beautiful animals. Over time my Mother started putting our pictures up on the wall that runs along the stairs. A couple years ago she realized that she did not have any pictures up there, and she was determined to make the “wall”. She is new to fishing and has caught many fish but none have been worthy of the wall, well at least she didn’t think they were worthy. It wasn’t until this year that she decided she was going to fish hard with the guys; we woke her up at 5 O’clock one morning to take a drive up to the Missouri. The fishing has been incredible in previous days and I knew this would be her chance to make the wall, the dreams of catching a big fish were the saving grace for getting her up that morning. The weather changed and began to warm up significantly which made the fishing more difficult than in previous days. Fortunately we still were able to catch some fish and about mid day fishing deep my Mom hooked up on a beautiful Rainbow; this fish gave us quite an air show running and taking line jumping on opposite sides of the boat. I don’t know who made more noise the fish or my Mom screaming. She was ECSTATIC seeing her face while holding that fish was priceless; everybody on that stretch of the river new she caught a fish and that she made the “wall” because she was screaming it. I made the wall!!!

That day we floated from Holter dam down to Craig. We were fishing Micro Mays, Green Machines and size 20 Copper johns. We also had some luck on Size 8 20 inchers. The depth we were fishing changed but it was in between 4-8 feet depending on where we were fishing with a tippet size of 2x,and 3x Fluorocarbon. When using the 20 Incher as your first fly we did not find any need to add split shot, But if you were to fish double nymph rigs with the smaller flies you needed to add split shot to get the fly down there one BB would suffice, but it is all personal preference. When fishing these double nymph rigs it is important to tie the second nymph on the eyelet rather than the bend of the hook, you will notice an increase of takes and more fish on the “wall”. The important thing was to take your time and fish all the ledges seems and buckets.

May 11, 2012

I had a chance to split the boat with our friend Chip and had a fun day. We floated from McAtee to 8Mile, quite the float. The bite was good until late afternoon. The action was again on Skwalla stonefly patterns and Caddis emergers. We had some March Brown hatches coming off and Caddis. The Delektable Hurless with Dan’s special epoxy back was good again and a variety of streamers were good with Caddis emergers behind them. All in all it was a fun day and great to get out and about with the fish.
