August 2nd, 4th, 5th, and 6th, 2013

These past few days on the Maddy the fish have been torturing the nocturnal stone, which is out, and we in return have been testing their decision making skills with our version of the nocturnal! Chubby’s cousin (Gang Green) tied special here in the shop for our guides in the size 14 dry hook seems to be the ticket for right now. Along with the hopper, lots and lots of browns have been taken on this fly in the early to late morning with a lightning bug or some flavor of size 16 nymph below it. Hopper fishing is very good to great right now, so get out your hoppers and throw ‘em! Pearl or Silver lightning bugs (size 18) have been the most productive dropper. The traditional bugs like the prince nymph, the pheasant tail and the hare’s ear nymphs have still been producing average fish. Best luck is in the morning with the cooler air and water. Look out for those sprucies, they are on their way!! Best of luck, Happy Fishing!!!

August 2 and 3, 2013 Gallatin River

It’s time for fishing all across Southwest Montana. For the last couple of days I had the opportunity to fish the Gallatin River, undoubtedly one of the quintessential western fishing rivers. Green cold water runs through some of the most beautiful scenery I have laid eyes on, and the fishing…wow. The Gallatin has always been a great fishing river for me and many others. The river is narrower and the fish are not hard to find. Some relentless pressure from wading anglers has driven many into swift water and small pockets behind exposed and submerged rocks. Some of the larger pools get slammed day in and day out by guides and recreational anglers making some of the fish line shy and spooky, but if you run a dry or emerger in faster, silver water, the fish are stacked up like cord wood and ready to eat. Delektable Flying ants in red and black #14 caught many fish in addition to soft hackle caddis and PMD emergers fished with a small split shot. Don’t forget a small stimulator in orange or yellow! The fish can’t help themselves! Take the bobbers off and try tight lining the emergers and nymphs through narrow channels on far banks and between rocks. But the dry flies…too much fun not to throw and the fish are eating off the top!

July 31 and August 1, 2013

Another couple of days with one of our favorite groups! Nick, Jim, Dan, Marty, Brandon, and Gunnar, and Adam took this group fishing and had a great time! The fishing was reported great in the morning and a little slower in the afternoon on the first day (continuing to see a pattern here) …Psycho princes, gold, silver and pearl lightning bugs,(16s and 18s) also the Girdle Bug and the Evil Weevil were killing it:). The second day with the group was once again great in the morning and slower in the afternoon. Soft Hackle Hare’s Ear in the 16 and Softie Red Copper Johns 16s and 18s have been the heroes these couple of days too. Its always a

July 26, 27, 28, 29 and 30, 2013

PMD crackbacks seem to be what the fish want here right now. They are eating Psycho Princes and other PMD patterns like the Guides Choice Hare Ear too (16s), but they are really keying in on the PMD crackback (split case) in the size 16 and 18 with the bead. Once again the mornings have been better than the afternoons with bigger fish eating earlier.

Today was a great day even with the rain (which we needed anyway). No real big ones, but a lot of fish! Girdle bugs are working great still for the nocturnal stone. Olive and brown seem to be the color, but they will take ‘em all! Dan, Marty, Dan M, Brandon, Dave and Jim

July 25th-August 1, 2013

I want to start off by saying the Stone is fishing good! I was lucky enough to spend 5 out of the last 7 days there. The floats were Sheep to Springdale, Carter’s to Mayors and Grey owl to Mallards. Below and Above Livingston produced quality fish with sculpin patterns (mc’cunes, bow river buggers) and bead heads (copper johns, lightning bugs and shop vacs) as well as Chubby’s and small Adams flies. Through town they were eating hoppers (size 12 and 14 morrish’s with tan, yellow and pink), the size of the fish were smaller but the number caught increased through town. Don’t be afraid to fish in the really deep water on the edges and in the middle of the river, since water temps have fluctuated and scattered the fish all over the river. As I’m sure most people know the weather in Montana can

change drastically; one minute 90 degrees then severe thunder storms with golf ball size hail, be careful and be prepared for the unexpected. If you have the opportunity to get over and fish the Yellowstone I highly recommend it!

July 25, 2013, Yellowstone Park

Roger Dodger went up to West Yellowstone to get a $40.00 season Yellowstone Park license. He decided since he had the whole day off he would go in and fish at Bakers Hole and Barnes Hole on this very hot day. He did very well on a Royal Chubby Chernoble size 14 that I tied special just for him. He says they may have been taking it for a hopper, for he was seeing a lot around. Roger states that there was no reason to change flies on this day, they were taking that fly way too hard to change to another! He also told me that this year was a record year for the Park so far but there was not a soul to be found fishing around him! There is rumor that golden stones are still flying around up there too, so if you have a Park license, get up there and get what’s there to be got!!! Happy Fishing!!!

The fishing is still pretty good round these parts! We have been going out after work and doing great these past few nights. Big stimulators and nocturnal stones on top are working well in the evening. Many caddis variations in the size 16 realm are also working quite well. Dan’s Delektable Twisted Baby (Brown and Tan) is working very well now for the spruce moth or caddis or something good:). The red flying ant has been spotted and the fish are eating them! So, get yer ants out and give ‘em a toss. In the nymph world girdle bugs (Brown and Olive size 8) are still tearing it up. Anything shiny and sparkly with a small beadhead seems to be doing the trick underneath your big bug. What I have been doing also is running two small beadheads with a lot a weight and I have been having pretty good luck. PMD nymphs are really getting some fish in the middle of the day for us hear. And don’t forget about the hopper! He is coming, so maybe throw him a little early to get the jump on some of these smart fish?! Happy Fishing!!!

We had a fun family float today including brothers, their wives, and children and their friends and six of our great guides. It was a lot of fun in the sun! Swimming and floating down the river with Randy Cain (just add water) keeping everything happy with fun and games and fishing 🙂 . Everyone had a great time with the different fishing experience levels and personalities within the family! There were a few beginners and a few pros in the mix, and everybody caught fish! One of the beginners was the champion of the day, catching the biggest and the most fish, Yeah! To Summarize the day, there were not a lot of crushing huge fish, however a few really nice

fish were caught. Some fish were caught on girdle bugs some on small nymphs and some on dries. I’ll spare you from the exact pattern details, but it was the same as of late with PMD’s, Caddis, and Nocturnal Stoneflies. I’m going to let the pictures tell the story with this great family and their awesome attitude and love for the outdoors!!! Happy fishing!!!

Fishing with a father and son has always been one of my favorites. Especially with Harry at

84 years old and Wayne being a similar age to me. It brings up memories of fishing a lifetime with my own dad. We fished from Jerry Creek to the Powerhouse two different days on the Big Hole.

There were Tricos, small PMDs and Caddis; the pictures tell the story.
